The HiSET exam gives out-of-school youth and adults the best opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and earn a state-issued high school equivalency (HSE) credential.

The GED includes lots of different styles of questions, including multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, short answer and extended response (essay), so get comfortable with each format. The language arts portion of the exam requires the most complex essay response, asking test takers to read two differing viewpoints on a topic and write an essay that explains which one was best and why.

Preparing a set of winning strategies is also helpful to succeed on the GED Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA) test. In this lesson, we will explore some strategies you can employ to help you.

Each subject test has a potential for 200 points, and students who score 150 or higher earn a passing score on that section. Test-takers must pass all four sections to earn the GED. If you score less than 150 on one or more sections of the GED, you can wait 30 days and then retake that portion of the exam; you won't need to retake the sections that you passed.

In order to pass the GED, the composite score must be 2,250 or greater. You must score 410 or greater in each subject area to pass. A passing score demonstrates you have attained the knowledge equal to or greater than 40 percent of graduating high school students.
